Tom Florence serves as Chairman of Tortoise Capital Advisors, L.L.C., the Tortoise Capital Series Trust and Tortoise Energy Infrastructure Corporation, and as Chief Executive Officer of Tortoise Capital Advisors, L.L.C. Mr. Florence previously served as Chief Executive Officer of 361 Capital. He brings more than 41 years of leadership experience in the financial services and investment management industry.
Mr. Florence began his career at Merrill Lynch in equity capital markets before transitioning into investment management. He spent several years at Fidelity Investments, where he served as an officer of the Institutional Services Company. He later joined Morningstar, Inc., the global leader in independent investment research and investment management services, as a managing director and member of the firm’s six-person executive management committee. During his tenure, he founded and served as President of Morningstar Investment Services, a registered investment adviser managing mutual fund portfolios for financial advisors and their clients.
Following Morningstar, Mr. Florence became a managing partner of Dividend Capital Group, a leading real estate investment management firm that is now part of Ares Management Corporation, a global alternative investment manager. He also co-founded and served as President of Dividend Capital Investments, a registered investment adviser specializing in portfolios of publicly traded real estate securities. Mr. Florence later founded 361 Capital, a multi-billion-dollar alternative investment management firm, and served as its Chief Executive Officer, further extending his track record of building and leading innovative investment management businesses.
Mr. Florence has also served on the board of trustees of the Janus Funds. Throughout his career, he has founded, built and led investment management businesses across multiple asset classes and distribution channels, with a focus on innovation, strategic growth and serving the evolving needs of investors and financial advisors.
Mr. Florence holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from The Pennsylvania State University and is a graduate of the Kellogg Management Institute at Northwestern University.
